Culture & Tradition

Theater, music, folk costumes, wood carving, arts and crafts, castles and churches. Hardly any other region offers such an abundance and diversity of culture and traditions.

Discover the charming village of Oberammergau with its picturesque centre, winding alleys and squares. Cute boutiques and stores invite you to shop. In small cafes, pubs and Bavarian restaurants you can join the village life.

Castles, churches and museums

Already King Ludwig II appreciated the valley of the river Ammer. The heavenly peace, the breathtaking scenery and the fabulous nature have inspired him to build his castles. In Linderhof, Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau and at his hunting lodge Schachen you can walk on the footsteps of King Ludwig II.

Discove  the bavarian piety in the churches of the Pfaffenwinkel:

Ettal Abbey, the church of St. Peter and Paul in Oberammergau, the collegiate church Rottenbuch, the Welf minster in Steingaden and the World Heritage - the pilgrimage church of Wies. Experience more than 1000 years of church history.

A rich array of unique museums awaits you in our region.

Whether it is the history of woodcarving at Oberammergau Museum or the Art of the Blue Rider group in Murnau and Kochel am See. You have the opportunity to experience history where it originated.

Since 1634, every 10 years the Oberammergau people perform the passion play. It is the oldest and most famous of its kind worldwide.
You can empathize with its almost 400 years of its history, in the exhibition at the Passion Play Theatre.
For the next Passion plays 2020 tickets are already for sale from 2017on.
In recent years, the director Christian Stückl contributed to  the evolvement of the Passion Play Theatre into a cultural hotspot.

In the years between the Passion Plays, unique, high level theater and opera performances are put on the 40 m wide outdoor stage, mostly with actors from the village.
